The Milky Way - part 1

Would you like to know more about the place where your home lies? What I mean by home is obviously the Earth situated in the Milky Way galaxy. Well, today you have a chance to read about some facts you may not have known before.
The first thing is that our galaxy measures about 120 000 light years across. It totally blows my mind, to be honest. Its thickness is unimaginative too: 1,000 light years. It's sad to think that we'll never be able to see our galaxy's shape from afar, we can only base on models shown by researchers. Or there is a possibility that we'll be able to do it in a really long future, although who knows how long the Earth will last?
The next thing that caught my attention is the object that lies in the center of our galaxy. There is a supermassive black hole - it has the mass of 4 million Suns or even more. No worries though! It's a natural phenomenon, plus it's so far away from us that it'll never manage to destroy our Solar System.
Let's look at the future now. The nearest galaxy to our Milky Way is the Andromeda Galaxy. It's very likely that it will collide with the Milky Way in three or four billion years. They'll become one giant galaxy as a result of the whole collision process. I would like to see it but sigh.
I'm going to write part 2 soon so that you can learn more. Hope you liked it! Here's the link to the source:
